Introduction

Boots and GPS

Many visitors to Mauritius are fortunate enough to enjoy the breathtaking landscape, beaches and scenery of Mauritius. All too often, most tourists spend most of their time around the hotel pool or the beach, and they will usually retain the services of a tour guide to be shown around the island including the main viewpoints and places of interest.

Unfortunately, this often means that tourists will be taken to the same places, evidenced by the similarity of photos published on various Photo sharing websites, and those having made the very long journey to the island will be none the wiser about the many hidden gems found through the cane fields and forests of the island.

Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire

The mountain of Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire is the highest mountain in Mauritius at approximately 830 metres above sea level. Despite of this status, this is easily the most accessible mountain hike in the island though somewhat a long walk at approximately 3.5km each way.

Location

The mountain is located in the south west of Mauritius in the Black River National Park. The path starts at the Black River Viewpoint which serves as a popular destination for tourists and visitors travelling through the area.

Getting prepared

Using the GPS track logs (GPX)

The track logs provided are in standard GPS EXchange format. These files can be uploaded to most GPS devices, including newer mobile phones with built-in GPS capabilities and the appropriate software. They can also be viewed in Google earth to visualize the track. I personally use a Garmin GPSMap 60Cx.

GPS Maps for Mauritius

Whilst routable GPS mapping is not an absolute necessity for off road hiking, it is a useful addition to those not familiar with the streets of Mauritius, and can be a great time saver.
