Pointe du Diable
Pointe du Diable is a small peninsula on the eastern coast of Mauritius located between Bambous Virieux and Grand Sable. This very short but steep hike from the coastal road offers some excellent views over the lagoons of the eastern coast and the cove of Grand Sable.
Location
The location of Pointe du Diable is notable for the cannons and fortifications visible on the coastal road. These historical fortifications and war buildings date from the war between the French and British colonisation of Mauritius.
The location is served by by bus routes travelling on the eastern coastal road.
Route Description
This is a very simple hike, which literally involves parking your car on the coastal road in the parking provided by the cannons, then heading straight for the hill above.
- Make your way to the clearing on the side of the coastal road where the historical buildings and cannons are located.
- Have a look around the historical buildings which seem to be covered with graffiti on the inside.
- Walk for a few metres northwards until you have passed the small farm at the start of the hill.
- Following the track log as closely as possible, head up the hill until you have passed the trees and emerge near some small shrubs.
- Follow the footpath which will take you around the north side of the rock, to the back where a telecommunication antenna installation is located.
- Go around the installation and you will now be on the roof of the installation.
- Taking care around the cables holding the antenna, make your way to the top of the rock where you can enjoy the excellent views of the east coast.
